Individuals who tend to develop tinea versicolor usually experience repeat episodes. Treatment of tinea versicolor is aimed at controlling the condition on a chronic basis. If we don’t, the problem will likely come back. Ease of treatment is imperative as well as it being as aesthetically pleasing as possible. My favorite routine consists of using an OTC soap known as ZNP bar. I’ll have the patient wash in the shower with the soap daily for 2 weeks. After they have towel dried, they will then apply an antifungal cream known as Lamisil. This can be applied to general areas. There’s no need to polka dot the rash itself. After the 2 week cycle, the excessive amounts of yeast are gone. However, the rash isn’t necessarily resolved. It takes time for discoloration to normalize. That´s one of the reasons sun protection is important. And this is another reason to do maintenance therapy, so that you don’t have to continually play catch up with your skin tone.
